Nance Emmett realized her desired to become an artist at an early age. She had her first pottery
sessions and use of a clay studio before the age of 5, thanks to the patience of a neighboring artist. At University
she focused on a BFA in painting until a class in ceramics changed her artistic direction forever. It was the
sculptural aspect of clay rather than the functional wheelwork that spoke to Nan. "Using the human body in a
simplified form lets the personality of the piece speak out to the viewer in an uplifting way."
After University, Nan moved to Austin, Texas where she was a charter member of the Laguna Gloria Potters Guild, with
a focus on raku firing. Many years later Nan relocated to Eugene, Oregon, where she helped create and was an officer
of the Maude Kerns Art Center’s pottery co-op. She was also a long time member of the Oregon Potters Association. Nan
started her own studio in 1988 and began producing the Spirit Rattles, as well as a line of limited edition clay
sculptures and one of a kind artwork. Having recently returned to her home state of Texas, Nan continues to create
wonderful clay sculptures and the spirit rattle collection in her Houston studio.
